  1. Meeting point Deák Ferenc Square

Deák Ferenc Square, in front of the stairs to a small, white church, opposite Starbucks.

  2. Full Itinerary 4 hours

After meeting your local guide for your private cooking class, we will ride public transit away from the touristy area of Budapest to one of the most popular food markets among Budapestians.

At the market, we will learn about the history and traditions of Hungarian cuisine as we try some authentic local snacks. We will show you why we love Hungarian salami and we’ll celebrate the national hobby of pickling every type of vegetable available by trying a few mouth-watering pickles.

We will then make our way downtown, where our culinary masterclass begins. We will warm up our gastronomic muscles by learning how to make a pogácsa, a delicious Hungarian snack similar to a cheese scone. Pogácsas often feature in Hungarian fairy and folk tales, as the staple food of the hero who is out to conquer the world or rescue the girl.

Next-up is an all-time favourite that you will definitely be adding to your culinary repertoire: chicken paprika with nokedli (Hungarian dumplings). Yum! While you cook we will share some fun food stories, as well as discuss some of the fascinating and sometimes funny customs that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Hungarian stews and meat dishes are almost always accompanied by a delicious side salad, so while our paprika chicken is cooking we will prepare one of the most popular side salads.

No meal would be complete without a knockout dessert, so finally we will show you how to make one of the best and certainly most popular desserts in Budapest. It’s an easy recipe that you are going to want to try again and again once you return home!

After a busy morning of fun in the kitchen, we will take a much deserved rest and sit down to enjoy the fruits of our labour, with a glass of local wine in-hand. Job done!

You will leave your private tour with a full belly and a head full of great ideas for your next Hungarian-themed dinner party! And don’t forget to ask your local guide about other unmissable food experiences in our beautiful city.

Note: This tour is priced for a minimum group size of two travellers. A solo traveller may still book this private experience but will be charged the base rate for two travellers.
