Top 5 most amazing experiences in Amsterdam
There is just so much to do in Holland in any weather. Whether you’re visiting for the weekend or a even fortnight, take a look at this essential checklist. Featuring the top five most amazing experiences in Amsterdam:
Beer Tasting under a Windmill
Amsterdam used to be covered in windmills, however now only 8 remain with the most popular being the de Gooyer in the Oostelijke Eilanden (Eastern Islands) neighbourhood. This has got to be one of the top 5 most amazing experiences in Amsterdam, as under the sails is Brouwerij‘t Ij – an award winning beautiful artisan microbrewery.
They also offer a 30 minute brewery tour, from where many of the local bars stock the organic and seasonal ales. Although why drink elsewhere when you enjoy a beer on the outdoor terrace.
Amsterdam’s Colourful Markets
Another superb experience in Amsterdam is a trip to the fabulous markets. There are plenty of bargains available and a great place to sample some local delicacies. You can buy everything from antiques and other collectables, vintage clothes and gorgeous artisan food.
Some of the most popular markets in Amsterdam include the Albert Cuypmarket in De Pijp (open from Monday to Saturday), Lindengracht market in the Jordaan area (Saturday’s only), and the amazing Waterlooplein flea market (Monday to Saturday).
If you are a bit of a treasure hunter, then head to the IJ Hallen flea market, held once a month at a huge warehouse at NDSM Wharf. For ‘foodies’ you can eat your way round thirty food stalls in a former tram depot.
This is one of three royal palaces in the Netherlands and is situated on the west side of Dam Square in the centre of the city. It is a 17th century building and began here as the city’s town hall. During the infamous Napoleonic Wars and following Napoleon’s brother Louis being crowned King, it went on to become the Royal Palace.
Architect Jacob van Campen constructed the town hall using sandstone, with a desire to copy the buildings of Rome. Step inside and the interior is a glorious example of the beautiful Empire style of the early 1800s. While open to the public all year round, the palace is closed during Royal events.
Amazing Experiences in Amsterdam
Another one of the top 5 amazing experiences in Amsterdam is a visit to this unusual and delightful forest! It has its own fabulous open-air theatre, a working goat farm (do try their delicious cheese) and a fantastic attraction called “Fun Forest”. This big adventure playground is adored by adults as much as the kids, making for a great family day out!
Electric Ladyland – a fabulous psychedelic gallery devoted entirely to fluorescent art. This fascinating place contains a stunning collection of fluorescent rocks and neon artwork dating back to the 1960s. While working as a geologist, the founder was attracted to naturally occurring luminosity. He then went on to convert his basement into a vast display of all things glowing.
