Experience Holiday Ideas in Rome

Words cannot do justice to the city of Rome. Inject some serious culture into your Roman holiday by exploring its fabulous architecture, bustling food markets, piazzas, and its marvellous historical sites. Take a look at these particular experience holiday ideas in Rome that are a definite ‘must’ see:

Pantheon

The amazing 2000-year-old temple is one of the best preserved of Rome’s ancient monuments. It is also one of the most important structures in the Western world. It was built by Hadrian in Marcus Agrippa’s earlier 27 BC temple and has stood aloof since possibly AD 125. Although its sombre and pockmarked exterior looks its age, it is still a unique and wonderful experience in Rome to walk through the vast bronze doors. Once inside you will see there aren’t any supporting beams, as the Pantheon is the largest unreinforced concrete dome that was ever built.

St Peter’s (Basilica di San Pietro)

Obviously you are in a city of outstanding churches but none can hold a candle to St Peter’s (Basilica di San Pietro). It is Italy’s largest, richest and the most splendid basilica. It was actually built above an earlier 4th-century church and was consecrated in 1626 after 120 years’ construction. The rich interior contains many superb works of art, including three of Italy’s most famous masterpieces; Michelangelo’s Pietà, his soaring dome, and Bernini’s 29m-high baldachin over the papal altar.

The Palatino (Palatine Hill)

Another superb holiday experience idea in Rome – sandwiched between the Roman Forum and the Circo Massimo, the Palatino (Palatine Hill) is a beautiful region of towering pine trees, unique ruins and awe-inspiring views. It was here that Romulus apparently founded the city in 753 BC and Rome’s important emperors lived in sheer luxury. Do take a look at the stadio (stadium), the ruins of the Domus Flavia (imperial palace) and the amazing views across the Roman Forum.

The Capitoline Museums

The Capitoline Museums date back to 1471 and are the world’s oldest public museums. Their collection of amazing classical sculpture is indeed one of Italy’s finest. Works include the famous Lupa capitolina (Capitoline Wolf) and the iconic Galata morente (Dying Gaul). Titian, Tintoretto, Rubens and Caravaggio all have work on display in a lavish picture gallery.
