Activity holiday ideas for Italy

If you just want to add an activity onto your holiday or have a full activity holiday, there are plenty of fabulous holiday destinations that include ‘add-on’ activities – anything from a hair-raising zip wire experience to a day or two scuba diving.

Terrain Walking in Italy

There are a great many types of fascinating terrain walking, hiking and trekking in Italy. For more relaxed walking it is very pretty along the Cinque Terre coastline, however, do be aware it does get very busy. The Alps and Dolomites in the north have excellent, marked hiking trails and a really good activity idea – is to base yourself in a ski resort as in the summer time they are very good for walking.

There are some fantastic walking trails in the National parks in Italy including the Abruzzo which is home to bears and wolves and you can stop overnight in high-altitude lodges.

Skiing in Italy

There are plenty of good ski resorts in Italy, the famous two being Cortina d’Ampezzo and Courmayeur. Italy is the home of mountains and in the winter time they provide a good choice of pistes. The Alps are all along Italy’s northern borders, and there are ski resorts all the way. The Dolomites ‘Super ski’ region consists of a huge area of places to ski with literally hundreds of lifts.

Cycling

Cycling is an excellent activity holiday as most of the Italian towns have cycle lanes, traffic-free zones and plenty of cycle hire schemes. Some tourist information centres and most hotels will provide free cycles. A leisurely cycle ride is a really good way to explore the long seafronts of Italy. The more experienced cyclists will be attracted to the Dolomites, where the mountain trails take you through dramatic landscapes.
